Adolphus & John Akuta Njoku Foundation

Adolphus & John Akuta Njoku Foundation and the upliftment of quality education among indigent pupils in Nigeria.

By Eze Amaeshi.

Education, as generally touted, is the right of every child. However, the reality among poor nations especially in Africa, is that education, especially quality education, is actually for the privileged few with wealth. Nigeria is a leading example of this sorry scenario. Most of the public schools in Nigeria are dilapidated. It is always a pitiable sight to behold pupils sitting on bare floor having no chairs and desks. Writing materials are usually lacking and other logistics that enable quality teaching and learning are lacking in these public schools. The worst of it is that most of these pupils often go to school hungry.

It was against this background that the Adolphus & John Akuta Njoku Foundation, a not- for – profit organization which was founded in the United States by Prince Dominic Njoku and his amiable wife Princess Dr Blessing Ijeoma Njoku ,  as God- sent humanitarians , came to the rescue. The Foundation which was named after Prince Dominic Njoku’s father, Engr. Adolphus Njoku and his brother, Mr. John Akuta Njoku – both of blessed memory – was formally launched on Thursday, December 14 at the Community Primary School, Ulakwo in Imo state of Nigeria- the alma mater of Prince Dominic Njoku where his father had also worked as a teacher before relocating to Lagos after the Nigerian civil war between 1967- 1970. The Foundation aims to provide succour to the indigent pupils in Nigeria, beginning from the founder’s home town – Ulakwo community. During the launch of the foundation, jubilant teachers and pupils were amazed at the lavish entertainment of food and drinks, various study materials like school bags, exercise books, pencils and others.

The excited teachers and pupils blessed the name of God for the divine visitation to their school. The Adolphus & John Akuta Njoku Foundation is driven by their motto which is, “every child you encounter is a divine appointment”.  The members of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation are, Prince Dominic Chibuzor Njoku, Prince Daniel Chiedozie Njoku, Dr. Festus Onyebula, Dr. Ngozi Onyebula, Mrs Chioma Joy Awduche, Dr. Daniel Obi Awduche.

A recent visit by this reporter to the Community Primary School Ulakwo in Imo state confirms that the pupils have been having regular launch and study materials which have greatly enhanced their academic performance. This intervention by Adolphus & John Akuta Njoku Foundation is unprecedented in Nigeria, hence the need for public – spirited individuals and organizations to assist in order to sustain this vision.
